As this Christmas season draws near I find myself thinking a lot about the wise men. How incredibly exciting that must have been to have seen the signs and to have followed the star until they saw the Christ Child with their very eyes.

It’s such a short and direct, yet powerful story. One that is told in only 12 versus in the Bible. They followed the sign. They saw the King of Kings. And they left to their own country without returning to King Herod. I often wonder if they recounted the story to their family and loved ones upon their return, or simply “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” as Mary did.

I watched a wonderful short segment about the Wise Men on “Music and the Spoken Word” a few years ago that has always stuck in my head. You can find the transcript here. My favorite line from that states “We learn from them that the birth of Christ holds significance beyond Bethlehem and that to find and worship the King of Kings is still the noblest pursuit for wise men and women throughout the world.”

God bless you this Christmas season!

I love Christmas. Plain and simple… I love it. I love the way children are overcome with excitement and draw closer to siblings, parents and grandparents. I love that it’s a time of year when we can focus on our Savior Jesus Christ. I often think of how Mary felt as she observed, experienced, and “kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19) as her Baby came into this word; “Born that man no more may die.” (Hark! the Harold Angels Sing)

That Christmas feeling, I believe, is a direct result of our Savior’s love. For this reason each year I find myself caught up in the many parts of the holiday that make it what it is… a celebration of love!

The sounds, smells, smiles, and stories all trigger rich emotions of happiness and love for me every year. And as I prepare for my 34th Christmas I find it even more enriching as my oldest son enjoys his upcoming 4th Christmas and my second son enjoys a 2nd. Even now as I write this and have a mix of Christmas music in the background (I know… It’s November 2nd, but I allow myself to enjoy Christmas music at its fullest for two months out of the year.) my son asks me who that weird sounding guy singing is. I explain the fun story of the Grinch and before I know it we’ve pulled out the video and are enjoying it together as he asks a hundred questions. Ah, I love the season.

Spread the joy!

Warmest wishes,
