Great Pumpkin Party 2011 - we had a great turnout!

Rose is finally drinking milk! really her birthday was only 18 days ago but my other children switched over so easily that this has felt like forever.

I am still in love with this wink!

Benji is a READING machine. He loves to read and I love that he has picked it up so fast. After a week or 2 of school I sent a note in his backpack that his baggy books were to easy so they bumped him up a level and give him two books at a time and he is still flying through them. He can read just about anything BUT he doesn’t do much reading outside of what is required.

Benji loves having Tay, Ky and Mar living with us - non stop fun.

Packer can spell his name! He wouldn’t even try at Joy School last year so I was excited to see him get it. We were at the park and they have letter blocks and he told me he was going to make his name – I assumed that meant finding a P, which he did find, but then he just kept on going! He is still Mr Project, today he helped me deep clean his bedroom and played with every little thing we found like it was Christmas morning.

Soccer is over for the season, we'll be back in the spring.

Rose is a standing machine – by that I mean she loves to pull herself up to everything, if she is awake then she is most likely standing up holding on to someone or something. She cannot stand by herself yet. She also loves to climb. Her favorite spot is up on the couch. And she is discovering the Love Sac this week since we have it back, it has been being babysat by Bens brother since our house is FULL.

My Big Girl at one of many soccer games

“So is Cali potty trained?I mean you don’t have much time before the new baby comes and YOU DO NOT WANT 3 in DIAPERS.” Thank you mom for the reality check! 🙂 I would love for Cali to be out of diapers but it just isn’t happening. She sits on the toilet, grunts, makes fake pee sounds, talks about using the big girl potty BUT she has never physically ACTUALLY used the toilet so we are still waiting. I think I will force it when she turns 3 if it hasn’t happened yet.

Cali with Aunt Michelle at Soccer - it takes all of us to keep her happy - she is my toughest child (still)

Benji is a social machine lately. He keeps making knew friends at school and comes home itching to play with them. He tells me that he is one of the funny guys but Isaac is super funny and Tye is kinda funny like him. He also enjoys playing with Truman and seeing guys from school at soccer. He hasn’t made any lasting friendships yet but he is getting the friend thing down. Having older cousins live at our house is giving him some insight on how the friend thing works.

Caramel apples for FHE this week!!

We got a few Halloween costume items in the mail today. Packer lit up SOO bright when he got his. He was grinning from ear to ear. He is still stinking cute and innocent and easy to please and … I just want him to stay this way forever 🙂

Tara and the girls dipping the apples in butterfinger.

“I am the Mom, you the sister, you the brother and Rosie is the baby.” This phrase comes out of Cali’s mouth several times a day. She is ALWAYS the mom and she is good at it. She is bossy, calls everybody sweety, and takes care of everybody. Sometimes I forget that she is still just 2.

let me help with the apples - please

Ben has become the Master Chef around here. He cooks EVERY Sunday and we ALL love it. My siblings have a standing invitation to Sunday dinner and he has never disappointed. Some of his specialties are Benoganoff, Bensagne, Corn Ben and Chili, Ben Vida (pork burritos), and classic ‘Sunday Dinner’. These are 3 to 6 course meals for 10 to 16 people so it is no small task. I wish every day were Sunday.

We celebrated Taylee's 11th birthday on the 11th!!

Rose is always sick lately. Not necessarily take me to the Dr sick but just enough to make her GRUMPY. It seems about weekly that she gets a little fever and just can’t be happy. On Sunday she was a monster. She had a quick nap from 10:30 to 11am and then I brought her home from church at 12:30 and let her have another little nap until 1:00. I wanted to go to the last part of church so we headed back over and she lasted maybe 5 minutes before yelling loudly and then waving to all of the women when she got her way and we exited the building. I never leave church early but this time I did. Ben says he will wrestle her next week and we both think there will be a better outcome.

I love when babies pass out on the floor - adorable.

Benji is growing up, this months milestone… he can walk to or from school by himself! I am soo excited for this because that means I shouldn’t have to load the van with lots of kids to go get one kid a football field length away from our house! And once he is independent then he will be able to take Packer next year and Cali after that and… ahhh I see a light at the end of this tunnel 🙂 I know winter will bring its own challenges with walking to school and he still convinces us to take him when he can BUT he is capable of going by himself and that is huge.

Our big First Grader! showing off his desk.

I have been helping out in Benji’s class on Thursday mornings! It’s fun to see him in class with his classmates. I am helping a few of the kids with their reading. At first I figured that some other mom probably had more time than I do to help but after parent teacher conferences I signed myself up and it is working out great. I love it.

the Legos have resurfaced - I hid them for the last 2 months to keep the clutter under control BUT we all love the Legos.

Ben and the kids cleared out the garden today. The kids have soo much fun “working” with Dad. I love it.

    everyone hard at work

Cali loves picking tomatoes and raspberries - she eats as she goes.

Packer wanted to show me the cool little zuchinni!

Benji is the family Ham, he is always trying to get a laugh

Rose trying to eat a pumpkin

these are still my favorite part of the garden

    Stadium of Fire 2011

I went to the Stadium of Fire! I went when I was a teenager, I’m thinking summer of 94 and I loved IT! I remember thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen so, Ben and I got tickets this year! and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT – we LOVED It. It helps that we are already big Brad Paisley fans but the show was just really neat. I loved the patriotism that you felt there and all of the good songs that were sung. I would definitely go again. LaNell and Caleb were great company. I picked the perfect in the shade, straight on view, Cheap seats. It was Awesome.

Our Group waiting for the show to start, we were in portal II, sec 124, Row 18, seats 31-34

the dancer girls did a good job - that many girls synchronized is tough

Brad was the best part of the evening.

Fireworks set to music are the best - they went from 10-10:30

It was a great night. So glad we dropped the kids off at their cousins, Rose included 🙂 It makes this overcast 4th of July with Ben gone seem bearable. Ben is at scout camp all week. I think I’ll try and brave the late night fireworks with the 4 little munchkins and be grateful for this country and the freedoms I enjoy.

    Ben’s Birthday

Ben’s Birthday was yesterday! He is 1 year older and wiser now! He had a good day – We went to his work at lunch time to bring him balloons and say hi. Then we gave him his presents – a new grill! Brewer chewed our old one when he was a puppy so it is very temperamental and you have to hand light it and guess how hot it is – ANYONE WANT IT? So after work we had to try out the new grill, snuck in FHE and cake and ice cream and then we watched a movie, Unstoppable. We partied with his siblings on Saturday night. Ben is a  Super Hero Lover so we all met up at the theater to watch Thor and then stopped at JCW’s, (I think 2 birthdays ago was Wolverine and JCW’s so it is tradition now). And just so I don’t forget – my favorite JCW shake is chocolate with peanut butter and peanut butter cups.

    present time

Ben with his 4 kids - how old do you think he is??

Captain America Cake! and funny faces!

always putting on a show for the kids 🙂

I think we only fit 26 candles on

Benji spent 10 minutes trying to get Ben to talk so he'd have to eat under the table - Cali finally got him.

WE LOVE BEN. HE IS THE BEST.

    Sunday Dinner

Have I blogged about Sunday Dinners yet?? I love Sundays and the fact that my husband makes dinner every Sunday makes it hands down my favorite day of the week. It gets better – he doesn’t just rip open the Mac and Cheese or make a standard meal – he makes a different, tasty, 3-5 course meal every time! Today we had a delicious roast. I often request beef stroganoff. His Bensagne has become famous around here.

Ben loves variety which is something that I am not good at so this is his chance to make the food that I never do. I think that is one of the main reasons he does Sunday Dinner and he enjoys cooking BUT the main reason… I am ashamed to admit it but… it is what it is… we used to go to Than and Erica’s house for dinner’s on most Sundays. Erica would always make a delicious dinner and then we would have Erica and kids over sometime during the week when Than was out of town and it seemed to be a decent trade off. Well the Hancock’s moved in June and Sunday afternoons would come around and 5pm would come and go, 6pm too and  Ben would realize that I didn’t have a dinner plan. ( I wasn’t used to needing a dinner plan and I was pregnant) So Ben stepped up and announced that he would cook Sunday dinners from now on!! He has not disappointed since 🙂 I’m not sure what next Sunday will bring but I can guaranty that it will be good.

And Rose is 7 months old now! She is almost 16 pounds. She loves to eat.

Is still learning to sit up and roll over.

She LOVES the bumbo and being held. Benji can always make her smile. Cali loves being her other mother.

She has started to whine if mom leaves the room 🙁 She takes a bottle. She sleeps well at night. Takes 2 or 3 naps per day.

Packer likes to give her loves but isn’t quite sure how to interact with her yet. (he is addicted to Plants vs. Zombies right now)

We love her bald head and chubbiness 🙂

    Costa Rica! (every little detail)

    Tuesday Night April 5th

We dropped Benji, Packer, and Cali off at the Falabellas at 6pm – they were so excited to spend the night with their cousins. They happily told us goodbye and ran off to play. Then we headed for a long night of airplane hopping. We left at 8:30pm – Salt Lake City to Los Angeles to Miami and finally into Liberia, Costa Rica at 10am. Not the most restful night of sleep but we did have empty seats by us so we got to bring Rose’s car seat and she slept pretty well.

    Wednesday April 6th

the first thing to catch Rose's eye - the humongous fan at the airport

We got our luggage and made it through security real easy and were greeted by 80ish men vying to be our Taxi to our Hotel. Luckily we had a shuttle waiting for us as part of the all inclusive package from work so they found us and loaded us on a mini bus and Ben, Rose and I with 2 other couples from work headed to the south west to the Riu Guanacaste Hotel. I was surprised at first by how dry everything was, it reminded me of Oroville in the summer. We learned that it is the very end of the dry season so it is as dry as it gets and the rain will be coming soon. (as you will see from our pictures it was still green in lots of areas and very pretty.) The drive to our resort was just over an hour. The dirt road to our fancy hotel caught me off guard (supposedly there was a contract problem between the hotel and the government) and the locals all drive fast on those skinny windy roads but we made it and checked in at the resort around noon. We spent the afternoon checking out the hotel set up. We unpacked, walked down to the beach, checked out the pool area, had our first of many refreshing juice drinks from the bar, and were stopped several times to show off our little white skinned chubby blue eyed baby. At 6pm we went to the Liberian Buffet Restaurant. The food was AMAZING. They had anything you could think of and it was all really tasty unlike a normal buffet. Our favorites that night were the tostadas and mangoes and lots of good meat. That evening we listened to the Riu Band and watched the “Broadway” show. They were both a bit cheesy but we were entertained. We went to bed exhausted after a full day and a red eye the night before.

    Thursday April 7th

We woke up and had more mangoes for breakfast, also tried cucumber shakes and bacon and eggs. Then we headed down to the beach. We put Rose in her carrier and we just started walking the beach. We went a ways down to the other end of the beach enjoying the scenery, shells, birds and hot hot sun. We walked back towards the Hotel and then went swimming in the ocean. It was so warm. Rose liked it except when the BIG waves came. What I thought was amazing was that it was just the right temperature. I was never cold the entire time even getting in and out of the water you were just always comfortable. The sun would go behind the clouds and it was still perfectly sunny and warm. I loved it.

So then we went to lunch at the restaurant down by the pool and had the best Guacamole ever! Yes we ate lots of other stuff but I went back several times for the Guac. That afternoon we chilled at the pool. Swimming, reading and eating ice cream. Right at sun down a security guy came by with a baby sea turtle in hand!! He let Ben hold it and then told us Muchos muchos and pointed to the beach. We headed down to the beach and they had about a hundred little baby turtles that had just hatched! SO cool. We watched them squirm around in the ‘cages’ and learned that the conservationists were keeping them until 4am when the hotel lights would be off and the babies would have a better chance of following the moon out to sea. That night we had a company dinner at the Steak House at 8:30. They gave awards to everyone that was there and talked about the company and goals and how each of the employees had gone above and beyond in their role. We didn’t get out of there until 11pm.

    look at this cute girl

    happy Rose

a few of the baby turtles!!

    Friday April 8th

Another yummy breakfast to start the day off right. After that we played a little tennis – a little being about a half of an hour before we were dripping sweat and baking in the sun. Then back to the pool 🙂 Yes, it was perfect pool weather at 10am! It was actually a bit sunny but the pool is so big that we were able to keep Rose under the bridge for shade most of the time.

    we love to swim

We got dressed for the day, grabbed a snack and then headed out on a shopping tour. They took us to a few souvenir shops where we purchased trinkets for the kids. Wood seemed to be their specialty, anything made of wood. Then they dropped us off at the city park in the middle of Liberia. We had seen a Pollo Campero restaurant on the way in and Udine has told us that they have the best chicken ever so… even though we had been eating nonstop for 2 1/2 days we had to go try it, and… It was REALLY good. We walked around town a little and talked about how it reminds us both of our missions in Brazil. And then we sat in the park and talked (tried to let Ben talk) to some of the locals. Then we headed back to the hotel where we had 6:30 reservations for the specialty Chinese restaurant. We were in no way hungry at this point but we helped ourselves to plenty of food and topped it off with Mango Cake. We chilled for a bit and called it a night when Rose got grumpy.

    Pollo Campero = yummy chicken

    Saturday April 9th

    the river cruise!

We had a 7am River Cruise! So we got on a mini bus at 7am, after grabbing a little bread just like I used to eat every morning on my mission 🙂 The bus had a few stops picking up other tourists and trading us to another bus but we had a fun tour guide that told us all about the old town of Filadelphia and explained the way they grow sugar cane and melons and how they thrive on manual labor because it provides jobs for everyone. He showed us Iguanas and different types of birds and about 2 hours later we were at the river. We got on a boat with our tour guide and a boat captain and headed out. The water is brown so you can’t see what is in there but I did feel it and just like everything else in Costa Rica, it was warm. They showed us a few different Night Birds, and a few little crocodiles lounging on the banks. We saw lots of iguanas and bats.

night bird - i forgot the name already

    hello mr. crocodile

    huge iguana!

don't bats just creep you out?

    on the boat

Then we headed the opposite direction and started to hear and see the monkeys. Our captain took us over to one of the trees where they pulled out a banana and started making monkey noises. Within a minute the monkeys just started coming towards the boat. They were white face monkeys about the size of rose but obviously skinnier and with super long arms and legs. A few of the monkeys jumped onto the boat and then in the boat and then there were about 15 monkeys climbing all over us tourists and eating pieces of banana! It was really neat to see them that close up and feel them.

    monkey?

    monkey on the boat?

    monkeys really do like bananas?

yes i said Rose size - i meant length, not thickness

    aren't they cute?

    our tour guide, Jose.

the monkeys really did climb on us! i want to post the video if I ever time cause this was really neat.

We saw a couple of Macaw’s. Thy were super pretty. This picture doesn’t do them justice…

    the macaws

After that excitement we headed a little further down river and found a 6 to 8 foot crocodile that was in the water! Our boat captain went and grabbed some chicken meat and started luring the croc towards us! He put the meat on a stick and then brought it right in by the boat where he came up and grabbed it off the pole. He started hand feeding him after that. We had definitely never seen a crocodile that close up. Their mouths are long and they have TONS of sharp teeth. Very cool.

yes that guy is swimming right to our boat! We have a cool video of this too so I'll see what i can do...

That was the grand finale of our river cruise. We tipped them well and got back on our bus for 2 and a half hours back to the hotel. That afternoon we had another yummy lunch complete with guacamole and ice cream and then went to the shops at the resort to look around. Then the beach was calling us to come swim one last time. Rose was asleep so Ben and I took turns watching her and swimming. I told Ben that I kept feeling something in the water so I got out… he went in and discovered that there were hundreds of little fish right on the shore line! I went back to see for myself and there were – tons of little fish coming in and out with the waves and swimming right into you and not caring. We laid on the beach until it got too hot and then said goodbye and headed to the shade of the pool. We swam some more and relaxed and soaked in our last moments of wonderfulness. Then we did the same at our late dinner. We enjoyed all of the yummy buffet food and drinks and visited with some of the Mozy group. Then we went over to the stage and enjoyed some Michael Jackson music/impersonations before calling it a night.

    our last swim

    goodbye perfect swimming pool

one more specialty drink, we learned quickly to communicate to the bar tenders 'sin alcohol'

I loved this view with the moon trying to shine through

    Michael Jackson show

our little frog friend waiting by our hotel room! Luckily he never made it in. I did come home with quite a few mosquito bites and something itchy on my leg. Hopefully it goes away soon.

    Sunday April 10th

everyone loves Mangoes - this little girl threw the biggest fits every time we had food and didn't share it with her.

Our hotel departure time was 11am so we had time to get packed up and then enjoy one more all you can eat Riu breakfast special. Have I mentioned yet that Rose was a celebrity there? Everyone stopped to talk to the baby and tell her how beautiful she is. She got soo much attention and just loved it. We checked out and got on a bus for the airport in Liberia. We paid 26$ per person to leave the country, checked in with American Airlines and then went through customs before buying our 5$ soda to keep us cool in the outdoor airport. We had a 4 hour flight to Dallas and then made it through all of the US customs and declarations and security and recheck your baggage and then our flight to Salt Lake was running late but a lightning storm was coming in so they hurried us out of there but took the longer southern route to avoid lightning. It was on this flight when we went to watch a show we realized we had left our tablet on the plane from Costa Rica 🙁 boo… But we made it to SLC around midnight, and home around 1am. It was an awesome vacation. I feel like I actually relaxed a little and still got to see and do lots of cool things. The all inclusiveness and all paid by the company-ness were awesome. We loved our vacation to Costa Rica – Pura Vida!

    peace out

    family update

Rose: is ready for cereal! she loves to eat.

yummy to my tummy - 5 1/2 months

Cali: is thinking that she is to big for naps – 🙁 – last week she only took one nap. I am not ready for this 27 month old to be awake all day so I am happy to report that she did take a nap yesterday and is taking a nap right now.

to big to fast - she has also started jumping off of the ledge and doing backward somersaults off the couches.

Packer: This guy came in the kitchen a few days ago to tell me: “I stuck my finger in that thingy and it stung it.” I had no idea what he was talking about so we just went on with our day. A little while later we were in the new toy room and he showed me the light switch that didn’t have the cover on that he had stuck his finger in and gotten shocked!

THE STINGY THINGY, I quickly put the covers on!

Benji: This guy went to play at Bradley’s house again and while there he and Bradley went in a closet to play. Well once they were in they couldn’t open the door to get out because the door knob was broken from that side! Benji said that they both got scared and started crying and screaming for help. No one was coming because they were downstairs and everyone else was upstairs. Then they remembered that they could say prayers to ask Heavenly Father to help them. He said that they prayed that Bradley’s mom would hear them and come open the door. He also said that they said the prayers out loud, he said about 13 prayers and Bradley said 15! Well we think they were in there for a good 40 minutes until Bradley’s mom did hear them and let them out! I’m proud of them for their faith!!

the Benj posing in the newly painted toy room.

Ben: A good way to scare your husband is to clean out from under the bathroom sink and leave the pregnancy test box on top of the garbage. Ben came down a little worried and pale looking that night :).

toy room is painted!! where's the best deal on carpet???

MUSTACHIO is the origional title of this post but Cali was helping me with the computer so musta.38-+0o is what we ended up with – O’well.

I am so gratetful that Halloween and MoVember are over – I had a bearded husband for almost 3 months and part of that time was only a mustache which is just not acceptable. I always look forward to the month of December but never so much as this year!!

    November 30, Good Bye Mustache!
